Advantages
  • Speed

ADSL internet is 4 to 26 faster than standard 56Kbps dialup internet access.

  • Low Latency

Because ADSL modem/router devices do not have to do as much work before sending data over the telephone line, the wait between connections to remote computers is much shorter.

For more information about what this means, have a look at the Disadvantages of Dialup Internet page.

  • Always-On
No Connection Costs (apart from the first ADSL service connection fee)

Because ADSL does not tie up the part of the telephone line that is used to make calls, you can send/receive faxes without having to disconnect from the internet.

This also means that because the ADSL modem never needs to "dial in", you don't have to pay for session connection fees.

  • Work from Home?

If you setup an ADSL service at both home and the office, you can create a secure VPN to access files resources.

You could work from home with ease.

Disadvantages
  • Unavailable in Many Areas

ADSL is not available to properties that fit into the following categories:

    • Many/most rural areas are not ADSL enabled

    • Properties behind a fibre RIMs or copper Pair-Gain system

    • Properties that are to far from the exchange (5.5KM of telephone line)

  • Expensive Installation

ADSL costs much more, to install, that dialup internet access.

This is due to the requirement for your PSTN provider, (i.e. Telstra), to physically "patch" your telephone line into your local DSLAM.

Because this "patching" process is of such a high cost, Sunet sell it directly to you at no extra cost on top of the providers charge.

As well as the line activation, you also need to purchase a relatively modern ADSL modem/router, telephone line filters and perhaps an hour of a technician's time in order to install this service.
